About the role:

The Senior Land Management Officer (SLMO) reports to and supports the Pilliga Operations Manager for the planning and implementation of conservation and land management activities across the Pilliga Service Site, in collaboration with the Science team. The two staff streams (operations and science) work together in an integrated manner to design, implement and measure the effectiveness of land management strategies as part of OneAWC and AWC’s national approach to conservation.

The SLMO is responsible for providing direction and supervision of other land management staff, volunteers and contractors engaged to complete the land management programs.

The SLMO may be required to act in the role of the Operations Manager in their absence.

The SLMO position will be based in Narrabri and work across the Pilliga Service Site. In addition, you may be required to assist at other AWC sites within the region.

Critical competencies:

  1. Getting things done:  you need exceptional planning and organisational skills, including a demonstrated ability to prioritise and execute a large number of tasks in an efficient manner. 
  2. Managing staff:  you need excellent people management skills, including the leadership of, and managing and coordinating remote teams of staff, volunteers or contractors.
  3. Working with people: excellent communication and interpersonal skills including the ability to establish and maintain relationships with a diverse range of stakeholders and your AWC colleagues.
  4. Practical land management and asset management or comparable skills/experience:  You need to demonstrate knowledge and practical experience delivering land management programs including fire management, weed and feral animal control programs or comparable experience that is readily transferable.  Demonstrated practical skills managing assets and infrastructure is required including:
    1. The implementation and maintenance of infrastructure projects such as fencing, road maintenance and building maintenance and projects.
    2. The management and use of a wide range of plant and equipment (tractors, generators, pumps and power tools, chainsaws, welders etc)
    3. A broad knowledge of trades (building, mechanical, fencing, plumbing, welding & electrical) is desirable, including the ability to carry out routine tasks and maintenance.
    4. Fire crew and fire management training and experience.
    5. 4WD experience in relevant unsealed road and off-road conditions is essential.
  5. Financial management: Experience in assisting to deliver projects in a cost-effective manner and be able to code and track expenditure, operating within the approved budget.
  6. Paperwork/compliance: Demonstrated ability to maintain records and implement permit/authorization processes.  
  7. Resourcefulness: The ability to improvise and ‘problem-solve’, developing practical solutions with limited resources.
  8. Living in the bush: Previous experience of working and living in a rural area, and the supervision of teams in geographically diverse locations.
  9. Information technology:  Ability in using standard business software packages (including Microsoft Office suite, project management, and GIS) is essential, as is experience in use of a range of mobile apps.
  10. A passion for conservation: Understanding of and interest in Australian ecology and conservation issues.
  11. Willingness to travel.

Qualifications:

  1. Formal qualifications in a relevant discipline would be advantageous, but is less important than strong, practical experience and a good track record of delivering ‘on-ground’ results.

Licenses, Certificates and/or Training:

  1. A valid manual driver’s licence with 4WD experience in difficult conditions is essential.
  2. A current firearms license for NSW
  3. Experience operating agricultural machinery such as trucks and tractors and relevant licenses, where required.
  4. Fire management training and experience (desirable).
  5. Current first aid qualifications.
  6. National police clearance certificate.
